Assessment of Need
An Assessment of Need is an assessment carried out under the Disability Act (2005) to determine if a person presents with a disability, the health and education needs (if any) arising from the disability and the health services or education services (if any) required to meet those needs. A “disability” under this law, refers to a condition which arises “substantial restriction” meaning:
(a) is permanent or likely to be permanent; results in a significant difficulty in communication, learning, mobility or in significantly disordered cognitive processes
and
(b) gives rise to the need for services to be provided continually to the person/to the need for services to be provided early in life to better the disability.
What to expect at Evolve
The assessment involves clinicians carrying out an assessment to answer the question of “if your child presents with a disability of substantial restriction”. At Evolve, we complete this assessment and return the outcomes to the Assessment Officers in the HSE. We are focused on providing a holistic assessment which determines in full what health and education needs your child presents with and making recommendations for ongoing care, and designating if this meets the criteria for a disability. We do this through clinical interviews, information gathered from a wide range of sources, meeting your child and completing both formal and informal assessment measures, depending on what your child needs.
