Assessment of Need
An Assessment of Need (AON) is an assessment carried out under the Disability Act (2005) to determine if a person presents with a disability, the health and education needs (if any) arising from the disability and the health services or education services (if any) required to meet those needs. A “disability” under this law, refers to a condition which arises “substantial restriction” meaning:
(a) is permanent or likely to be permanent; results in a significant difficulty in communication, learning, mobility or in significantly disordered cognitive processes
and
(b) gives rise to the need for services to be provided continually to the person/to the need for services to be provided early in life to better the disability.
What to expect at an assessment
When you come to see us at Evolve, your child may be assessed for autism, ADHD, intellectual disability, communication difficulties or sensory and motor difficulties. They will be seen by a variety of professionals including clinical psychologists, speech and language therapists and occupational therapists. As part of the assessment, our clinicians will complete a developmental history assessment which will help us to understand the difficulties your child faces. Assessments may be held online or in person and may include observation of your child in their educational setting.
